Details: | We have Nationwide and they have been very good about paying claims without contesting. We have also had PetPlan in the past which is very good, but they have raised their rates significantly over the past few years. Both offer very good coverage. We had Trupanion about a decade ago and had a very poor experience with them. We only tried to submit one claim for reimbursement and they did everything possible to get out of paying it. It's been a long time, so maybe they have improved their business practices since then, but I would definitely recommend Nationwide ------------------------- Definitely worth getting the pet insurance. I’ve had Nationwide for my Lab Schooner for the past 13 years and they’ve been great! We’ve had our share of emergencies and it’s comforting to know that you have coverage when you need it. It’s starts out at a low rate but as your dog ages, the rates will go up. My dog is 13 years old now and my insurance is currently $190/month. But it’s totally worth the peace of mind. ------------------------- AKC has great pet insurance, and your dog does not need to be AKC certified or purebred to use it. It worked out great for our lab because she had to have ligament surgery & most insurances will not cover this (explicitly excluded on policies), however AKC did. ------------------------- To offer a perspective on a different experience, we’ve been the owners of just under a dozen dogs and cats over our lifetime (not all at the same time, lol) and have never had pet insurance. Many were AKC and purebred but not all, some rescues, some obtained as young puppies from reputable breeders. Instead of purchasing insurance, we did the math over the expected life span of the dog and found that putting away the same money on a monthly basis into a money market or other account, one will almost always come out ahead after 12 years ( about the average age of our Dobermans and Shepards) and still have ready access to the money. At $50 to $200 a month for over a decade, you’d be self-insuring and not have to fight the insurance companies. ---------------------------------- We used Banfield at Petsmart. You pay a monthly fee. I never had a problem with them. I just had to put my dog , Vannah in June. Her Vet was Jodie Potts, Here in Sterling. ---------------------------------- I have had a great experience with a company called Healthy Paws. I have an 8 year old Lab and he has had to have 2 surgeries and Healthy Paws was terrific to work with. Very easy claims process and their coverage was excellent. ---------------------------------- Banfield’s “puppy plan” is phenomenal for the first year. I have a family member out of state who is a vet and recommended it. It includes ALL vet visits (anytime, as needed), spay/neuter, all first-year shots/vaccinations, etc. It’s been great for us. We had to add the flea/tick and heart worm treatments though, which is an additional cost, but bundled in makes it easy to include. To clarify, it is not pet insurance, but chances are you won’t need that for the first year anyway. Oh, and it includes a Wisdom Panel that runs a DNA test to give you breed (percentage of all breeds of the dog... which was actually more insightful than we expected) and genetic/health information. It’s awesome! Was nice to know that there’s no foreseen health problems with our pup. Highly recommend! We will probably switch to a smaller vet after the first year because the best benefit at Banfield is the puppy plan because of the spay/neuter and early vaccinations. Beyond that the other plans probably are not as great of a deal. 2020-08-04 09:55:19 |
