In today's licensing world, all acupuncturists must have a minimum of a master's degree in acupuncture or oriental medicine to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine in almost all states in America. Most states require us to also sit for board exams to become licensed to practice (Maryland doesn't require this; practitioners only need a Master's degree in acupuncture to practice). Chiropractors, doctors, etc have the option to go to workshops to be allowed to add acupuncture into their practice. Often times, though, this is used as a supplement to their primary field of medicine, as opposed to being their primary field of medicine. Some, however, do attend acupuncture school and sit for the acupuncture boards to become an L.Ac. Acupuncturists tend to ascribe to a particular style of acupuncture so it's important to try various ones to see which style works best with your needs at that time (ex: 5 element (Shani Horne), traditional TCM, Yin Yang, sports medicine, etc). In regards to allergies, there is fantastic style of acupuncture called SAAT that only a few people in the area are certified in (Charlotte Fandey being one of them; she is FABULOUS, by the way; I highly recommend her). In regards to community acupuncture, there are several in Maryland and one in DC. A new one just opened in Manassas. There is also a student clinic in Fairfax attached to the Virginia University of Integrative Medicine, which is where I attend. The rates are exceptionally low, and all patients are overseen by licensed acupuncturists while being treated by the students. 2019-06-16 18:09:22 |
