National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, May 8, 2014 May 8 is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day – learn more! ) May 9 – NEXUS Conference, Access to Hope: Whole Child and Whole Health NEXUS is hosting a free, all-day conference titled “Access to Hope – Whole Child and Whole Health: Facilitating Health and Resiliency in the Community, Family, and School” on Friday, May 9. The conference is open to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the FCPS Virginia Hills Center in Alexandria. NEXUS is an outreach committee of the Advisory Board for the Gartlan Center in Mount Vernon. May 15 – Youth Mental Health First Aid CSB’s popular Youth Mental Health First Aid class is being offered in two half-day sessions on May 15 and 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Pennino Building in Fairfax. The 8-hour certification course is designed for adult family members, caregivers, school staff and other adults who work with young people ages 12-25. It is also appropriate as a peer support program for older adolescents (over age 16). Participants learn about unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents and how to help a young person who is in crisis or experiencing a challenge related to mental health or substance use. Cost is only $25. Get more information or register for a class. May 17 – Community discusses teen stress, wellness, and resiliency Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is hosting “Community Conversation on Teen Stress: Fostering Wellness and Resiliency”on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School. The event will bring together teens and parents, the school system, Fairfax County government, private mental health providers, coaches, and community and faith-based organizations who work with teens to discuss the many facets of stress that affect today’s youth and how wellness and resiliency resources can provide support. A light lunch will be served. Details and registration information are available on the FCPS website. May 18 – “This Is My Brave” opens up about mental illness “This Is My Brave” is a live presentation of essays, original music, and poetry performed by individuals living with – or loving someone with – a mental illness. The show will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 at Artisphere’s Spectrum Theatre in Arlington; tickets are $16.37 and are available through the This Is My Brave website.
