AP test scores may be considered in a number of ways. Some education journalists focus on the number of students that take AP exams. Other journalists and statistics compile the number of students that score 3 or higher on exams. While each of those considerations provides useful information, it is helpful to consider AP scoring before analyzing the results. AP scores transform into college credit in different ways at different universities. For example: The University of Virginia requires a score of at least 4 for most AP exams for credit (Computer Science A and English Literature require a 5.) Virginia Tech typically requires at least a 4 for full credit. George Mason University typically requires at least a 4 for full credit. MIT typically requires a 5 for full credit, and provides no credit at all for some AP exams. William and Mary requires at least a 4 for full credit. With the above in mind, this article summarizes the AP scores by school, with a focus on the number of students in the 4 and 5 range. The first table below ranks the FCPS AP high schools (test takers from IB schools excluded) based on the share of AP test takers scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP tests for the 2009-2010 school year. While the results vary by school, in total 47.5 percent of FCPS test takers earn a 4 or 5. This exceeds national averages, where approximately 35 percent of test takers receive a 4 or 5.2 With these generally strong results, there are also some inconsistencies, and many test takers earn the lowest scores. For example, six FCPS schools saw the number of test takers with 1’s and 2’s exceed the number of test takers with 4’s or 5’s. In total, nearly 9,000 test takers in FCPS received a score of only 1 or 2 (nearly 4,000 receiving the minimum score of 1). Attached is data sheet and summary for each high school. (2010) |
